Governor's Academy is situated thirty-three miles north of Boston, five miles south
of Newburyport, and just east of beautiful Plum Island.
The school's four hundred and fifty acres are situated on the Parker River, nestled between
tidal marshes and woods, in a part of New England where the history and beauty of the land
have been lovingly preserved.
The "Governor" in the title refers to Governor William Dummer, who served as Governor
of the Massachusetts Bay Colony when it was still under British rule. As he had no descendents,
he bequeathed his land and house for the purpose of creating a school.
In 1763, the school opened its doors to its first twenty-eight students. Founded more than a
decade before the Revolutionary War, it is now known as the oldest boarding school in America,
Paul Revere created the school seal; Samuel Adams and John Hancock signed the
Incorporation Charter, and John Quincy Adams served as secretary to the Board of Trustees.
In the early 1900's Booker T. Washington JR. starred on the football team.
I find it fitting that a retreat based on Tibetan Buddhist ideas, which have taken hold
so strongly in this country, should be held on a site so steeped in our own American history.
The pastoral serenity of this place will serve to sustain our quiet time.
